The Homepage of Daniel Hollands: Web Development Graduate!

After two years of hosting with Host Gator, I’ve decided to move to a new host – Just Host (Yes, it’s an affiliate link – it’s worth a shot ^^).
2 years ago I needed a lot of power to host sites like Arathor.net, but now that I’m stepping down from running the site, and planning on passing the responsibility back to the community itself, I just don’t need the power offered by Host Gator. I admit that I’m hoping that Unknown Tales will take off, and if it does, I can find a host suitable for it, but right now, Just Host is cheap and cheerful, and from what I can tell, seem to be well liked.
Of course, it is possible that they suck, but until I try them out for myself, I’ll never know… So watch this space and I’ll keep you updated.

It has been a few months since I last did a Wordle for this site, so I thought I’d do a new one.

First things first, I got my grades for my Independent Study back.
C+
It is not yet official, but unlikely to change. It is not as good as I would have liked, but it’s not a bad grade. It does mean, however, that I should graduate with a First with honours.
As you can see, I have a new theme on this blog. I’m looking to start learning the WordPress system and start creating themes for it, so watch this space.
Other than that, work is going well. I think I’m close to an initial launch of the site I’m building – I’ll be sure to link to it once it’s up.

Wow, so, like, it’s been AGES since I last updated this blog – sorry about that.
As anyone that was following my progress will know, I was working on finishing the Independent Study for my degree at the University of Worcester. The deadline was Thursday the 17th December 2009, and seeing as it is now the 25th January 2010, I either handed it in on time, or I didn’t. Read the rest of this entry »

You remember me praising Miles Johnson for his Cupcake forum plugin? Well that hasn’t panned out so well. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s been 26 days since I first put pen to paper (or rather, finger to, uumm, keyboard – you know what I mean) and started to physically code the site – and now it’s online:
It is not 100% finished, but it is working well enough for testing by the masses. So what are you waiting for? Click on the link above and give it a whirl – then let me know what you think.
I would spend more time talking about it, but I’ve had a long hard day coding, and I need to say goodbye to my old Xbox 360 (getting a new one tomorrow), so I’m off to do some gaming and chilling out.

I’ve been able to fix this problem, check out my solution.

So, after all the great work that I did on the site during the first three days and a half days of coding, it’s now four days later and and I’ve had nothing but trouble. It has been so much hassle in fact that I almost gave up on CakePHP and considered changing to CodeIgniter! (But didn’t.)
I don’t want to get into too much detail, but I was having some issues with both the wonderful forum that I was raving about three weeks ago, and a star-rating system that I wanted to add to the site. In the case of the former, the latest edition of the plugin has some bugs which prevent access to the administration system (and the author is currently very busy with other projects, but hopefully an update will be released soon), and in the case of the latter, I was missing some user session data that I had no idea how to add. I don’t know where I thought I would be by this point, but I think I’ve made a lot of progress in just three and a half days of coding.
(Warning, this is a VERY long post.) Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve done the research, the focus group, the planning, and even an evaluation, but now I need to get started on the thing that all of this has been leading up to – the physical coding of the site!
I have to admit that I’m quite nervous at this point. I have some experience with CakePHP, having built two sites using it in the past (one of which has been lost, and the other for an E-Business Technologies assignment, for which I got a C- *boo*), but I’ve just not had enough exposure to it to feel totally comfortable with it.
